Every year a lot of students from Pakistan search for LUMS university on the internet. Most of them end up on the five top google ranking websites. These websites have a list of school names and some information about fees. This information is usually copied from another website. They also have a paragraph that says LUMS university is one of the universities in Pakistan.
They close the website. I still do not know anything new about LUMS university.
This guide is different from the others. All the information here comes from LUMS universities report from 2025 and rankings and records from LUMS university. We do not get our information from websites that help people get into college or education websites that just copy information from other places. If we say something is true about LUMS university we will show you where we got that information about LUMS university. If we do not have a source for something about LUMS university we will not say it in this article, about LUMS university.

2. Why LUMS Was Built
In 1984 Syed Babar Ali, an industrialist found a problem that nobody else was trying to solve. Pakistan had a lot of university graduates. What it really needed was people who were trained to manage companies in a professional way. The companies in Pakistan were hiring people who had never learned how to be leaders. The best people were. Leaving the country or taking jobs that did not help them learn and grow.
Syed Babar Ali got a lot of people together including business leaders, government officials and teachers. They all agreed that the only way to fix this problem was to start a new university from scratch.” His friend Abdul Razak Dawood helped him with this project “. The government officially recognized LUMS in 1985.
The thing that made LUMS really good was that it did not try to do much at once. After it started LUMS just had a business school for ten years before it added any other schools. It was not until 1994, nine years later that LUMS started a school for arts. The school for engineering did not start until 2008. The school for law started in 2004. The school for education was the one to be added in 2017.
This slow and careful approach is why LUMS is successful. When universities try to grow fast and add new schools before the old ones are working well they often lose what made them special in the first place. LUMS didn’t make that mistake. It built one school. Made it work really well before it started building another one.. That is why LUMS has such a good reputation today.

What QS Specifically Measured at LUMS
LUMS is rated number one in Pakistan for International Faculty and number one for Employer Reputation in QS 2025. The Provost, Dr. Tariq Jadoon collected the award on behalf of LUMS.
Dr. Tariq Jadoon said that the recognition from QS International World Rankings is a deal for LUMS. It shows that LUMS is really good at academics and that the university is dedicated to being the best. The reason why employer reputation is so important is that it is based on what hiring managers think. They rate which universities produce graduates they want to hire. This is not something that can be made up. LUMS alumni are doing well in their jobs. International employers know LUMS by name. They want to hire LUMS graduates.
4. Five Schools — What Each One Really
Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB)
The business school in Pakistan is very special. It is one of the schools that have a very important accreditation. This accreditation is called AACSB. It is very hard to get. In fact, more than 6 percent of business schools around the world have it. If you have an MBA from LUMS and you are looking for a job in London or Singapore the people who hire will know that your degree is good. They will not need someone to explain it to them because the accreditation from AACSB makes it clear that your degree is valuable in the business world. An MBA from LUMS is a thing to have when you are looking for a job in global business. The LUMS MBA is well known and respected.
2025 development: Dr. Muhammad Adeel Zaffar became the Dean of SDSB. He is the person from LUMS to hold this position. This is an achievement for LUMS as it shows they have strong leaders.
Dr. Fazal Jawad Seyyed was chosen by the AACSB Board of Directors to be part of its Asia Pacific Advisory Council for 2025. This council helps set standards for business education.

SBASSE applicants sit a LUMS Scientific Aptitude Test, also known as SSE. They take this in addition to LCAT. Sat.

Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences (MGSHSS)
The only school in Pakistan that offers a good liberal arts education for undergrads. The economics programs at LUMS are ranked number one in Pakistan by QS.
Here’s something that says a lot more about the school:
LUMS has produced one-third of all Rhodes Scholars from Pakistan this century. This year’s Rhodes Scholar is Jovera Shakeel, who studied Economics and Mathematics and was picked for her work on helping people who’re poor and making sure everyone gets a good education no matter their gender, class or if they have a disability. The Rhodes Scholarship is one of the academic awards to get in the world. So LUMS producing a third of Pakistan’s Rhodes Scholars is a deal that shows how good the research is there. It’s something that rankings can’t fully capture.
Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law (SAHSOL)
2025 is a year for SAHSOL because it completed twenty years since it was started. This year the Academic Report 2025 said something. There was a case called Asghar Leghari v. Federation of Pakistan. The people who worked on this case used things they learned from LUMS. This case was even talked about at the International Court of Justice in The Hague when they were discussing what countries should do about climate change.
The Pakistan Feminist Judgments Project is another thing that LUMS Law does. This project helped Justice Mansoor Ali Shah make a decision recently. In 2025 something else happened. Syed Qasim Abbas became the person from Pakistan to be a Judicial Fellow at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. He went to LUMS for law. This year the LUMS Law Clinic started. This is a place where students can do legal work that helps people, not just practice, in a classroom.
Syed Ahsan Ali and Syed Maratib Ali School of Education (SOE)
The School of Education is now in charge of a project to recruit and train teachers in Gilgit-Baltistan. This project is worth PKR 847 million. The provincial government is paying for it. The School of Education also has a project called the National Institute of Teacher Excellence for public schools. This project helps teachers in schools by using computers and the internet to teach them new things.
The School of Education is not a small school where people go to write big papers like MPhil theses all by themselves. It is a place that is really making a difference in how teachers are trained all over the country.
The School of Education has programs like the MPhil Education Leadership and Management. It also has a Minor in Education for students who are doing their undergraduate degree.
5. LUMS Admission Process — The Parts No One Explains

Graduate Admission
For MS programs you need to take the LUMS Graduate Admission Test, also known as LGAT.
If you are applying for SBASSE MS or PhD programs the requirements are a bit different.
* Local applicants need to take LGAT and also a Subject Test that is specific to LUMS SBASSE.
* Overseas applicants on the other hand need to take the GRE General Test and also a GRE Subject Test.
The step that changes PhD outcomes:
Students who get into PhD programs usually do one thing that others don’t. They find a teacher whose current research’s something they are interested in. Then they read what that teacher has written recently. After that they reach out to the teacher before applying. You can find all the research groups on the LUMS research portal. It only takes an hour to look through it.

6. LCAT Test — The One Warning Every Guide Misses {#lcat}
The LCAT is a 3-hour exam that you take with a paper and pen. It has multiple choice questions. The exam is divided into 7 sections. The first two sections, which are about math skills, are 30 minutes each. The other sections, which are also about math skills, are 25 minutes each. They keep switching between math questions.
Most people will tell you that the LCAT is similar to the SAT.
What they do not tell you:
* The LCAT is only given once per year so you only get one chance to take it. This is different from the NET exam at NUST, where you can take it at times and use your best score. If you do not do well on the LCAT you have to wait a year to take it again.
* The verbal part of the LCAT is not about grammar rules. If you are a student from Pakistan who is used to studying grammar rules for your FSc exams you might be preparing for the thing. The verbal section of the LCAT actually tests how well you can think critically and understand passages. It also tests how well you can make sentences better and understand how they are structured. Students who read a lot and think about what they’re reading do better on this test than students who just practice multiple choice questions.
* There are questions on the math part of the LCAT. If you are a student who did not study calculus like some students from arts or commerce schools you might be at a disadvantage. This is something that is mentioned in the description of the LCAT. It is not usually pointed out in study guides.

Most PhD candidates receive partial or full funding through research grants and fellowships. PhD study at LUMS at full cost without funding is uncommon.
8. Financial Aid —
LUMS has given out 11.6 billion PKR in help since it started.

This information comes from LUMS’ own records not from any guess or estimate.
Option 1: National Outreach Programme (NOP)
The best scholarship in Pakistan. The National Outreach Programme or NOP started in 2001. It covers everything: tuition, fees, lab costs, hostel, food and a monthly stipend.
Here’s something most guides don’t mention: NOP has a phase. LUMS finds students from across Pakistan from over 145 cities. They help them get ready for LUMS’ admission requirements before they apply. This means NOP is for students who didn’t have the means to prepare on their own.
NOP helps students from all backgrounds, ethnicities and minorities. LUMS wants to give opportunities to people who wouldn’t have had them otherwise. The programme is designed to help those who did not have access to resources.
Option 2: Merit Scholarships
The university gives out one hundred scholarships every time it accepts students. These scholarships are for the incoming undergraduate students. They pay for some or all of the tuition for the year. If the students keep doing and are on the Deans Honour List because of their grade point average they can get the scholarship again.
Option 3: Need-Based Financial Aid
The university will pay for some or all of your tuition fees; this is between 20 and 100 percent. They look at how money your family has to decide how much help you get. They do this every year when you’re in school. The good thing about the loans they give you is that you do not have to pay any money on top, which is called interest. This is important because LUMS does not charge you interest on the money they lend you.
Process note: You have to apply for help at the same time you apply to the university you cannot do it after you get in. If you wait until you are accepted to ask for help you will not be able to get any money for that year.
Option 4: ADB-Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP)
LUMS is the place in Pakistan that offers this. The Asian Development Bank is working with Japan to pay for the MBA studies of people from certain countries in Asia and the Pacific. These countries include Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and a lot of other countries too.
It is really surprising that almost no one talks about this when they write about LUMS. If you are a student from another country that’s part of the Asian Development Bank and you want to study for a graduate degree, in Pakistan you should know that LUMS is the only institution that offers this scholarship.
Option 5: Shahid Hussain Foundation Scholarships
Established in 2017 this scholarship is for undergraduate students from countries in the SAARC group. You apply for it through the LUMS admissions portal at the time as you submit your main application.
Option 6: External Scholarships via LUMS Collaboration
LUMS helps students get scholarships from donors and company partners. You can find these on the LUMS scholarships page. They have scholarships for industries and, for students who do well which are not listed here. LUMS scholarships are also offered by donors and corporate partners.
9. After LUMS — Real Graduate Outcomes
The main point is that Vice Chancellor Ali Cheema said this in the LUMS Academic Report 2025: “Over the years 30% of our graduating students have been admitted to top international universities with many securing highly competitive scholarships.”
So one in three LUMS graduates get into international programs or careers. The LUMS Academic Report 2025 has this information. It is correct. It has been. People have cited the LUMS Academic Report 2025.
Specific 2024–2025 Graduate Achievements
Jovera Shakeel is going to finish her BSc Economics and Mathematics in 2025. She is a Rhodes Scholar-Elect for Pakistan in 2025. Jovera Shakeel does work that helps people who’re poor and makes sure everyone gets a good education no matter if they are a boy or a girl, rich or poor or have a disability.
Hamza Ashfaq finished his BSc Accounting and Finance in 2020. Now he is a McCall MacBain Scholar at McGill University in 2025. Hamza Ashfaq does work that includes things like climate finance, new ideas for farming and education.
Syed Qasim Abbas is a person. He is the Pakistani Judicial Fellow to work at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Syed Qasim Abbas graduated from LUMS Law.
Mahnoor Gul studied English at MGSHSS. She was the captain of LUMUN. Mahnoor Gul led her team to win the Delegation Award at Harvard MUN in 2024. A team of students from the BSc Accounting and Finance Class of 2025 did something. They won the CFA Institute Research Challenge Pakistan Final. Then Jovera Shakeel and other students like her and Hamza Ashfaq are not part of this team. They also make LUMS proud. This team represented Pakistan at the South Asia round. LUMS is very good at producing Rhodes Scholars. In fact one-third of all Pakistan’s Rhodes Scholars this century are from LUMS. The Vice Chancellor talked about this in her statement in the Annual Report 2025. LUMS and its students like Jovera Shakeel and Hamza Ashfaq are making a difference in the lives of people like the poor and the disabled by doing work that helps them and by getting an education.

The Female Employment Statistic No One Reports
From LUMS Academic Report 2024: The LUMS female graduates get jobs at a rate that’s three times the national average for female graduates, in Pakistan. This is a big deal. It is not just a little better. The LUMS degree really means something to employers. That is why LUMS female graduates are doing so well in the job market. The employers know what the LUMS degree is and that is why they want to hire female graduates.

The simple answer is that these universities are not competing for students.
If you want to study engineering, technology or natural sciences then NUST is a choice. NUST offers an engineering degree that is recognized all over the world and it costs a lot less than LUMS. In fact NUST is ranked higher than LUMS in the world rankings.
If you are interested in economics, business, social sciences or law then LUMS is an option. LUMS has a reputation in these areas and its graduates do well in their careers, which is something that NUST cannot match especially when it comes to economics, business, social sciences or law.
11. Who Should and Should Not Apply to LUMS
Students at LUMS who do well are those who enjoy reading beyond their studies.
They feel comfortable defending their views and having others question them. These students can handle pressure they put on themselves, not the stress of exams. They value having a network of people and get that with 5,700 students it’s a community where everyone knows each other.
Students who have a time at LUMS usually have a tough time for a reason that you can see coming. The grading at LUMS is very competitive. The other students are the best from over the country, the top 2–5%. Some programs like SBASSE CS and MGSHSS Economics are really hard. If a student is not ready to study on their own at a university level these programs can be very demanding. I am not saying this is bad. I am just saying it is how it is. Students who know what they are getting into do a lot better than students who figure it out in the middle of the semester. One thing about money that’s clear: if a student is paying the full cost of an MBA with no help the return on investment depends on the kind of job they want. Getting an MBA makes a lot of sense financially for students who want to work in consulting, investment banking or be a manager at a company that makes things people use every day. But, for jobs where having a Master of Science degree would be just as good it is harder to say it is worth the cost unless the student gets some help.
Can a student from a low-income family attend LUMS?
Yes. This is what the National Opportunity Program was designed for. The program gives students from families a lot of financial help. This help includes paying for tuition a place to live, food and some extra money. The National Opportunity Program helps students from, than 145 cities. You should apply for the National Opportunity Program at the time you apply to the school do not apply for the National Opportunity Program after you have already applied to the school.
