Every year from March to June, my phone stays busy. Parents from Rawalpindi, Multan, Peshawar, and other cities call me with the same question: “Bhai, is COMSATS University Islamabad a good choice for my child?”
After 12 years of guiding students, my answer has become clear and confident. Yes, for the right student, COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) is an excellent and smart choice. This detailed guide will help you and your child decide whether COMSATS University Islamabad is the right fit or not. I will share everything honestly — the good, the bad, and the reality — based on real student outcomes I have personally seen.. I have also seen students who went to COMSATS University Islamabad and felt like it was not their choice and they never got over that feeling. The problem was not COMSATS University Islamabad it was their way of thinking. So I want to show you the picture of COMSATS University Islamabad. I will tell you everything I know from my experience without hiding anything. In this guide you will find all the information you need: the COMSATS University Islamabad admissions process for 2026 the COMSATS University Islamabad fee structure, comparisons of the campuses of COMSATS University Islamabad, merit lists, scholarships, job placements, the weaknesses of COMSATS University Islamabad and my honest opinion, about COMSATS University Islamabad that you can trust.
History & Overview of COMSATS University
COMSATS University Islamabad began its journey in 1994 as a project to promote science and technology in developing countries. It was formally established as COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) in 2000. In 2018, it was granted full university status and renamed COMSATS.
It was a reflection of 18 years of growth. From a tech-focused institute to a big university with many campuses and study areas. Today COMSATS University Islamabad or CUI has over 50,000 students across its campuses. It has produced hundreds of thousands of graduates. The university is recognized by the Higher Education Commission or HEC as a Category W3 university. This means it is among the universities in Pakistan according to the HEC. You can find the HEC ranking details on their website at hec.gov.pk.
What makes COMSATS interesting is that it grew because of its strong science and engineering programs.
This was at a time when Pakistan needed qualified engineers and computer scientists. This strong foundation is still visible today in its culture, teachers and where its graduates end up. COMSATS University Islamabad is still known for its science and engineering programs. Its graduates are in demand. The university’s focus on science and engineering has helped it grow and succeed.
Campuses Comparison
This is a question I get constantly: CUI Islamabad or CUI Lahore? Let me break it down properly.
CUI has seven campuses across Pakistan. Each has its own personality, strengths, and limitations.

| Campus | City | Notable Strengths | Merit Level | Vibe |
| Islamabad (Main) | Islamabad | CS, Electrical Eng., Research | Highest | Corporate, polished |
| Lahore | Lahore | Business, CS, Engineering | High | Vibrant, city energy |
| Wah | Wah Cantt | Engineering, Sciences | Moderate | Defence-adjacent, calm |
| Abbottabad | Abbottabad | Biosciences, Env. Sciences | Moderate | Scenic, relaxed |
| Attock | Attock | Engineering, Management | Moderate | Smaller, community feel |
| Sahiwal | Sahiwal | Sciences, Management | Moderate | Growing |
| Virtual | Online | Various programs | Entry-level | Remote learners |
My honest take:
- If you are targeting Computer Science or Electrical Engineering and have strong grades, prefer CUI Islamabad (Main Campus). Its location near the capital gives better internship opportunities and industry exposure.
- CUI Lahore is also a very strong choice, especially if you want a vibrant city life and belong to central Punjab.
- Other campuses (Wah, Abbottabad, Attock, Sahiwal) are decent but should be considered only if you cannot get into Islamabad or Lahore, or if you live nearby.

Popular Academic Programs
Computer Science & IT
This is COMSATS University’s strongest and most popular program. The curriculum is tough, regularly updated, and industry-relevant. In recent years, the university has added strong courses in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cloud Computing, and Cybersecurity.
CUI CS graduates are doing well in top Pakistani software houses as well as international companies. If you are passionate about programming and technology, this program is one of the best options in Pakistan at this fee range.
Electrical & Computer Engineering
This program is probably the most respected one. It puts a lot of focus on embedded systems and telecom and power electronics. The people who graduate from this program go on to work at WAPDA and telecom companies and defence contractors and also at tech startups.
Business Administration (BBA/MBA)
This program is really good. It is not as famous as the ones at LUMS or IBA when it comes to business. The MBA at CUI is recognized by HEC. It does not cost a lot of money. If you want to get a business education without paying the fees of LUMS and you are ready to work hard to make your own connections, the MBA at CUI is a good choice. The MBA at CUI is an option because it is cost-effective. You can get a business education from the MBA at CUI without spending a lot of money.
Biosciences & Health Sciences
These places are really underrated. The Comsats University Islamabad and the Comsats University Abbottabad both have good biology programs, biotechnology programs and environmental science programs. If you want to do research or study abroad after you finish your degree the biology department and the biotechnology department and the environmental science department, at Comsats University Islamabad and Comsats University Abbottabad are options because they have published a lot of research papers.
Other Programs Worth Knowing
- BS Mathematics / Statistics (strong for data science pipelines)
- BS Physics
- Civil Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Architecture (Islamabad campus)
- Pharmacy (select campuses)
Admission Process 2026
Let me walk you through this the way I’d explain it to a student sitting across from me.
Eligibility
To get into programs you need to have at least 50 percent marks in FSc or A-Levels or something similar. The minimum marks required can be different for programs. For example Engineering and Computer Science programs usually need more than 60 percent marks.
If you want to do BS Computer Science at the Islamabad campus you should have more than 70 percent marks in FSc Pre-Engineering or ICS to have a good chance of getting in based on merit. BS Computer Science at the Islamabad campus is very competitive so you need to have good marks in FSc Pre-Engineering or ICS.
Entry Test
CUI conducts its own entry test — the NTS-based CUI Entry Test or in some cases its own test depending on the session. The test covers:
- English (vocabulary, comprehension)
- Mathematics / Subject-specific content
- Analytical reasoning / IQ-type questions
In 2026 the test weightage is usually 50% test score + 50% academic record when they calculate the merit. You should check admission.comsats.edu.pk for the weightage and test schedule because it is a little different every year.
Merit List & Deadlines
Comsats University Islamabad usually puts out two or three lists of students who did well. The first list is available, within two or three weeks of taking the test. If you do not make it to the list do not worry. Comsats University Islamabad often gives a place to a lot of students in the second and third lists because some students who made it to the first list decide not to go to Comsats University Islamabad or they choose to go to other universities instead.
Typical 2026 Timeline (Spring and Fall intakes):
| Phase | Approximate Dates |
| Fall application opens | June – July 2026 |
| Entry test | August 2026 |
| 1st Merit List | September 2026 |
| 2nd Merit List | September (late) 2026 |
| Classes begin | October 2026 |
Spring intake is smaller and not all programs offer it. Confirm dates at the official admissions portal.
Documents Required
- FSc/Matric mark sheets and certificates
- CNIC / B-Form copy
- 4 passport size photographs
- Entry test result (NTS or CUI test)
- Domicile (for some seats)
Fee Structure & Scholarships
Fee Structure 2026 (Approximate, per Semester)
| Program | Campus | Fee per Semester (PKR) |
| BS Computer Science | Islamabad | 75,000 – 85,000 |
| BS Electrical Eng. | Islamabad | 80,000 – 90,000 |
| BBA | Islamabad | 65,000 – 75,000 |
| BS Computer Science | Lahore | 70,000 – 80,000 |
| BS Biosciences | Islamabad | 55,000 – 65,000 |
| MS / PhD programs | Islamabad | 80,000 – 100,000+ |
A full BS program is 8 semesters, so total degree cost for CS at Islamabad comes to roughly PKR 6.5 — 7 lakh over four years. Compared to LUMS (PKR 20+ lakh) or even FAST (PKR 8–10 lakh), CUI is genuinely affordable for what it offers.
Real cost of living estimate (Islamabad, per month):
- Hostel (on-campus): PKR 8,000 – 12,000
- Off-campus rent (shared room): PKR 12,000 – 18,000
- Food: PKR 8,000 – 12,000
- Transport: PKR 2,000 – 4,000
- Miscellaneous: PKR 3,000 – 5,000
Monthly total: PKR 22,000 – 40,000 depending on lifestyle. Islamabad isn’t Karachi-expensive, but it’s not cheap either.
Scholarships
This is an area where CUI actually does well. Available scholarships include:
- HEC Need-Based Scholarships — apply at hec.gov.pk. Up to 100% fee waiver for financially deserving students. Competitive but real.
- CUI Merit Scholarships — awarded to the top 10% of merit list students. Typically 25–50% fee reduction.
- Kamyab Jawan Program — Government scheme offering interest-free loans for tuition.
- CUI Ehsaas Program Affiliation — CUI is affiliated with federal need-based scholarship programs.
My tip for scholarship success:
You should apply for the HEC need-based scholarship on the day you submit your admission form. Do not wait. I see this happen every year. Students miss the deadline by a few days and they lose out on the full fee waivers that they are actually eligible for. The HEC need-based scholarship paperwork is really simple. You need an income certificate, a B-form and some utility bills. So it is an idea to do it early when you apply for the HEC need-based scholarship.
Rankings & Reputation 2026
Let me be honest here — rankings are useful context, not gospel.
HEC Ranking:
Comsats University Islamabad is in the W3 category which’s the third highest tier in the Higher Education Commissions ranking system. This means Comsats University Islamabad is one of the universities in Pakistan but it is not as good as some other universities, like National University of Sciences and Technology Lahore University of Management Sciences and Quaid-i-Azam University.
QS World University Rankings 2026:
CUI appears in the 801–1000 band. That is a great thing for a university from Pakistan. To give you an idea, a few universities from Pakistan even make it to the QS top 1000 list. CUI being in the QS top 1000 is really something to be proud of, for a university.
QS Asia Rankings 2026:
CUI is a university that is doing well for a school that is not very old and is in a country that is still growing. It is ranked between 301 and 350 in Asia which’s a good ranking for a school, like CUI. CUI is a school that is still developing. It is doing a good job so far.
Impact Rankings (THE):
CUI did well in Times Higher Education’s Impact Rankings. It did well in categories related to the Sustainable Development Goals. This shows that CUI is producing a lot of research in sustainability and sciences. CUIs research output in sustainability and sciences is really good.
The university’s performance in these areas is great.
So what does this mean in life? The name of CUI is known all over the world. This is especially true in the UK, China and Gulf countries where you find a lot of engineers and IT professionals. In our country CUI is a name that people respect. It can help you get a job but NUST and LUMS are still more important if you want to reach the top of a big company. CUI is a university and people know about it but NUST and LUMS are even better when it comes to getting a really good job.
Placements & Alumni Success
Comsats University Islamabad does not have a team that helps students get jobs after they graduate like some other universities do.. They do have a Career Services office. This office helps students find jobs by organizing job fairs introducing students to people who hire for companies and setting up interviews with companies on campus. Comsats University Islamabad has this Career Services office to assist students with their job search.
Where do CUI graduates work?
In tech there are companies like Systems Limited, NetSol and 10Pearls. Some other companies are Arbisoft, Contour Software, Netsol Technologies and TRG Pakistan. Many students who studied computer science at Islamabad campus have got jobs in companies. I know some alumni who work at Amazon AWS, Siemens in Germany and several tech firms in Canada.
In engineering there are companies like NESCOM, SUPARCO and WAPDA. Some other companies are National Grid, Huawei Pakistan and ZTE.
In business there are companies like Unilever, P&G and Standard Chartered. Some other companies are HBL and Habib Metro.
One of my friends who graduated with a computer science degree in 2022 got a software engineering job in Dubai after graduating from CUI. She said, “Honestly my degree from CUI was respected in Dubai. The technical foundation I got was strong. I had to improve my skills on my own but the core knowledge helped me get through the interview.”
Campus Life, Facilities, Hostels & Student Experience
The Islamabad main campus is really beautiful. It is located on Park Road. Has lots of green space. The buildings are spacious and modern. The Computer Science and Engineering labs have equipment. The library is big. Has a good collection of digital resources.
Facilities:
- Modern computing labs (400+ workstations in main campus)
- Digital library and HEC Digital Library access
- Sports facilities: cricket grounds, football field, basketball courts
- Medical center on campus
- Cafeterias and food court
- Student societies: GDSC (Google Developer Student Club), ACM chapter, IEEE student branch, drama society, debating club, photography society
Hostels: The college has hostels for boys and girls. The number of rooms is not very high so not all students who want to live in the hostels can do that. The girls hostel is very clean. The girls feel safe there. The boys hostel is a story. Some parts of the boys hostel are old. That is why the boys have different opinions about it. If students do not get a room in the hostel they usually look for a place to live near H-8 and Park Road.
Common student complaints I hear:
- “The administration is slow” — Yes, this is true. Dealing with the registrar’s office or fee department can test your patience. Build in extra time for anything paperwork-related.
- “Some faculty is inconsistent” — There are excellent professors and some who coast. Ask seniors before choosing electives.
- “Wi-Fi is unreliable in some buildings” — This has improved but it’s still mentioned. Carry your own data backup.
- “Class sizes are large” — Some intro courses have 80–100 students. Seminars and upper-level courses are smaller.
Honest Pros and Cons
What CUI Gets Right
- Affordable quality — It’s genuinely hard to find this level of technical education at this price point in Pakistan
- Strong CS and Engineering programs — Faculty quality is above average, curriculum is industry-relevant
- Research output — CUI produces real research; faculty publications are internationally indexed
- Employer recognition — Domestic tech sector knows and respects the degree
- Multiple campuses — Geographic flexibility for families outside Islamabad
- Active student societies — Particularly tech-focused clubs that give practical experience
Where CUI Falls Short
- Administrative inefficiency — A consistent, genuine complaint
- Placement support — Not as structured or proactive as NUST or LUMS
- Business school prestige — For pure management roles at top multinationals, LUMS/IBA still have the edge
- Campus social culture — More conservative and formal than LUMS; less vibrant than FAST in terms of startup culture
- Hostel capacity — Demand consistently exceeds supply
- Industry-academia gaps — In some departments, curriculum updates lag behind industry pace
COMSATS vs NUST, LUMS, FAST, UET
This is the comparison every parent asks me about. Here’s my honest field assessment:
| Factor | CUI | NUST | LUMS | FAST | UET |
| CS Program Quality | Excellent | Excellent | Excellent | Excellent | Good |
| Engineering | Very Good | Outstanding | Good | Good | Very Good |
| Business | Good | Good | Outstanding | Average | Average |
| Fee (4 years) | PKR 6–7L | PKR 5–7L | PKR 18–22L | PKR 8–10L | PKR 3–5L |
| Merit Difficulty | High | Very High | Very High | High | High |
| Employer Brand (Top Corps) | Good | Very Strong | Very Strong | Good | Good |
| Startup Culture | Moderate | Good | Strong | Good | Moderate |
| International Recognition | Good | Very Good | Good | Moderate | Moderate |
My honest recommendation matrix:
- You got into NUST? Go to NUST (for engineering). It’s still the gold standard for engineering in Pakistan.
- You got into LUMS? If you can afford it and you’re doing business or CS, LUMS is worth the investment.
- FAST vs CUI for CS? Both are strong. FAST has a slightly more intense coding culture and startup energy. CUI has better research infrastructure and more campus facilities.
- CUI vs UET? For Lahore campus students: UET is cheaper and has a strong regional employer network. CUI has a slightly better research culture and facilities. It’s close.
How to Apply + Pro Tips from My Experience
The application process starts at admission.comsats.edu.pk. Here’s the step-by-step:
- Register an account on the admissions portal
- Fill in the online application form (choose campus + program carefully)
- Upload required documents
- Pay the application fee (typically PKR 1,500 – 2,000)
- Appear for the CUI entry test on the designated date
- Check the merit list on the portal
- Pay admission fee within the deadline if selected
- Complete enrollment formalities in person
My pro tips:
- Apply to multiple campuses simultaneously — you can list preferences. If you don’t make Islamabad a merit, Lahore might still come through.
- Don’t skip the entry test prep — I’ve seen students with 80%+ FSc marks fail to make merit because they underestimated the test. Solve at least 3–4 past papers.
- Apply for scholarship the same day — I cannot stress this enough.
- Contact current students on LinkedIn or Facebook groups — the “CUI Students Community” Facebook group is active and helpful. Real students will answer real questions.
- Keep your documents ready before the portal opens — every year students scramble for attested copies at the last minute.
- Verify your program’s specific test requirements — some engineering programs require physics-heavy tests while CS leans more math/logic.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Is COMSATS University a government or private university?
The Comsats University Islamabad is a university that was started by the government. This is the reason why the fees at Comsats University Islamabad’re a lot lower than the fees at private universities, like LUMS or Bahria.
Q2: What is the minimum merit for CS at CUI Islamabad in 2026?
The merit for the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program at the Islamabad campus has been around 75 to 80 percent in the few years. This number can change from one year to another because it depends on the people who apply. You should look at the merit list for the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program when it is available.
Q3: Is the CUI degree recognized internationally?
Yes. CUI is recognized by HEC. It is in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
People accept CUI degrees for studies and jobs, in many countries. These countries include the UK, Germany, UAE and Canada.
Q4: What entry test does COMSATS use in 2026?
The College or University Institution uses either its test or a test that is based on the National Test Standards, for its admissions. You should check the admissions portal to see which test you need to take for your admission cycle because the test really does change.
Final Verdict
So — is COMSATS University Islamabad the right choice for you?
Here’s how I’d put it plainly:
Yes, if:
You’re good at Computer Science or Engineering. You want a degree that’s well-regarded. You don’t want to pay what LUMS charges. You’re ready to work to find your own job chances instead of relying on a big university name.. You plan to attend classes in Islamabad or Lahore.
Think carefully if:
You are mostly interested in business and management.
You have the option of IBA or LUMS.
These institutions have connections with employers for management roles.
If you need help with your career and finding a job CUI will give you the education.
With CUI you will have to build your own career because they do not provide as much career support and placement.
IBA and LUMS are better for business and management because they have employer networks.
No hesitation if:
I am comparing it to tier private universities that charge similar or higher fees for far weaker programs. In this comparison COMSATS University Islamabad wins every time.
My final word after twelve years of counseling is that COMSATS University Islamabad produces graduates and these graduates are technically solid. The students who do well at COMSATS University Islamabad are the ones who go in with goals they use every resource that is available at COMSATS University Islamabad and they do not spend four years wishing they were somewhere else at a different university like COMSATS University Islamabad is not good enough, for them.
