2. History and Background of Aga Khan University
Aga Khan University was started in 1983 by His Highness the Aga Khan. It was Pakistan’s private university. The Government of Pakistan gave it a charter. Aga Khan University is part of the Aga Khan Development Network. This network has institutions around the world. They work to make people’s lives better through education, healthcare and economic development. They do this in more than 30 countries.
The university began with one faculty, the Faculty of Health Sciences. They had their class of MBBS students. What made Aga Khan University special from the start was its philosophy. They wanted to build a university that would really help the developing world. They did not just want to do this as a school project. As something they truly believed in.
Forty years have passed. Aga Khan University still believes in this mission. Today Aga Khan University has locations on three continents. They have more than 15,000 teachers and staff. Over 18,000 students have graduated from Aga Khan University. These graduates work at institutions all around the world. Aga Khan University also publishes a lot of research that is reviewed by experts. In fact they publish more research than almost any other university in Pakistan. Aga Khan University is still working to make the world a better place, through education and research.
The AKU is a place that does not make a profit. Every single rupee it gets is used again for the students, for research and for health programs that help people. This is the reason it can really give help to students who need it and it is not just something they say to make themselves look good.
Most of the students at AKU are women. About two out of every three students are women. Also half of the people who teach at AKU are women. When AKU decides who to accept as a student it does not care about whether the student’s a boy or a girl, what they believe in what color their skin is or where they are from. These are things that AKU actually does not things it says it does. And it has been doing them for about forty years so we know they are true.

5. Admission Process 2026 — Complete Step-by-Step Guide
Here is the exact admission process for the 2026-2027 MBBS cycle, based on AKU’s official admission information booklet.
Important note before you begin: The official website of AKU says that you can not apply for the 2026-2027 cycle anymore. The last day to apply was May 13 2026.
If you want to apply for the 2027-2028 cycle you should read this to know what to do. You should start getting ready The AKU website will probably start taking applications for the 2027-2028 cycle around March 2027.
Step 1 — Read the Official AKU Admission Information Booklet
You need to download the Admission Information 2026-2027 booklet. You can find it at aku.edu/admissions. This is the place to get the information.
Please read the Admission Information 2026-2027 booklet from start to finish. It has everything you need to know. The Admission Information 2026-2027 booklet has information about what makes you eligible test details, how to apply, important dates and financial aid.
If you have any questions about the Admission Information 2026-2027 booklet you can send an email to mbbs.query@aku.edu.
Step 2 — Confirm You Meet Eligibility
Before you pay the application fee make sure your marks are good enough. The minimum marks you need in your FSc is 70%. We check this from AKUs document. If your marks are not high enough we won’t process your application.
Step 3 — Apply Online — Stage I
All applications are submitted online through the AKU admissions portal on aku.edu. For the 2026-2027 cycle, applications opened March 8, 2026 and closed May 13, 2026.
Documents required:
- Matric/O-Level certificate and mark sheet
- FSc Part-I or Part-II result CNIC or B-Form copy
- passport-size photographs
- IBCC equivalence certificate for O/A Level students
- Payment receipt for application fee
IBCC Warning for A-Level Students: The Inter Board Committee of Chairmen certificate from the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen takes a time to get, usually around 6 to 8 weeks. If you are an A-Level student you should apply for the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen equivalence certificate. Do not wait until the application deadline, for the AKU is near. A lot of A-Level students miss the chance every year because the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen equivalence certificate takes a long to get.
Step 4 — Pay the Application Fee
The application fee for students for the 2026-2027 cycle is PKR 8,800. You can pay this fee at any Habib Bank Limited branch using a fee voucher. Alternatively you can also pay the application fee for students through the AKU online payment portal. Remember to upload the receipt with the application for students. It is important to note that the application fee for students is non-refundable.
Step 5 — Sit for the AKU Entry Test
When you submit your application if you are a candidate you will get an admit card. This admit card has the date and time of your test and the place where you have to go for the test. The AKU Entry Test for the 2026 cycle took place on July 20 2026. You can find all the details about the test, in the part.
Step 6 — Stage II: Interview Process
The interview shortlist is made based on how you do, on the AKU test and your academic record. This is the part where a lot of students do not make it. Candidates who get into the AKU interview shortlist have to:
- Submit Application Form II (academic achievements, extracurriculars, interests)
- Provide two Reference Letters from teachers on AKU’s prescribed format
- Submit valid MDCAT results as mandated by PMDC
The shortlisted candidates have to go for two interviews, not one. Each group of people asking the questions makes their decision about the candidate. What is really interesting about Aga Khan University is that they do things differently than medical colleges in Pakistan. They have two interviews and that is something that AKU does that the other colleges do not do.
Step 7 — Final Selection
The school looks at the picture when they pick the shortlisted candidates. They check the record of the shortlisted candidates and what the shortlisted candidates said in the interviews. The school also checks things about the shortlisted candidates that they learned from the documents the shortlisted candidates sent in. This is a thorough process. Just because the shortlisted candidates got grades does not mean they will be selected.
Step 8 — Admission Confirmation and Enrollment
When the school picks the people they want those people get a letter that says they are in. They have to say yes to their spot by paying some money before the deadline. The classes start in January 2027. When the selected candidates join they have to pay some money one time. This money includes the fee to get in and the money to keep their spot safe. You can find out more about this in the part below that talks about the fees.
Maximum Attempts Rule — Critical to Know: AKU lets you try to apply to the MBBS programme two times. If you apply two times and still do not get in you cannot apply again for MBBS, at AKU. This rule is clearly written in the 2026-2027 admission booklet. So think carefully before you apply. Make sure you are really ready.
6. Eligibility Criteria and AKU Entry Test 2026
Eligibility — MBBS
| Qualification | Minimum Requirement |
| Pakistani HSSC (FSc Pre-Medical) | Minimum 70% aggregate |
| O-Level + Pakistani HSSC | O-Level with at least 6 subjects including English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics — plus HSSC with 70% aggregate |
| British A-Level (or equivalent) | Minimum B grade in Chemistry, Biology, and Physics — details in official booklet |
| PMDC MDCAT | Valid score mandatory for all applicants |
| Nationality | Pakistani and international students both eligible |
| IBCC Certificate | Required for O/A Level students |
Note from official document: AKU evaluates A-Level students in comparison with other A-Level applicants only — no attempt is made to convert A-Level grades to a numerical FSc equivalent. Do not worry about equivalency comparisons.
Reality check: 70% is the minimum to get your application processed. In practice, competitive applicants typically have 85% or above in FSc, or A grades at A-Level. The competition is intense — plan your preparation accordingly.
Eligibility — BScN (Nursing)
- Matric: Minimum 55% marks
- FSc (Part-I or Part-II): Minimum 55% in Biology and Chemistry
- Age: Minimum 17 years
- Open to all genders
AKU Entry Test — Detailed Breakdown
The AKU Entry Test is a 2-hour examination consisting of five sections. Here is the verified structure:
| Section | Details | Negative Marking |
| Biology | FSc/HSSC curriculum | Yes — 0.25 marks deducted per wrong answer |
| Chemistry | FSc/HSSC curriculum | Yes — 0.25 marks deducted per wrong answer |
| Physics | FSc/HSSC curriculum | Yes — 0.25 marks deducted per wrong answer |
| Mathematics / Scientific Reasoning | Analytical and reasoning questions | No negative marking |
| English | Reading comprehension and language | No negative marking |
Key facts:
- Each correct answer carries 1 mark
- Negative marking applies only to Biology, Chemistry, and Physics
- English and Mathematics/Reasoning carry no penalty for wrong answers — attempt every question in these sections
- The AKU test score is valid only for the cycle in which it was written — it cannot be carried forward
- Test centres are available in multiple Pakistani cities — candidates choose their preferred centre when applying
Entry Test Strategy:
When you are taking a test you should be careful with the science parts like Biology, Chemistry or Physics. This is because they have markings. So do not just guess the answers to these questions. If you are really not sure which of two options is correct it is better to skip that question. This is a thing to do.
In the parts of the test like English and Mathematics or Reasoning things are different. There is no penalty for getting an answer wrong. So you should try to answer every question, in these parts even if you are not really sure what the answer is. You should do this because Biology, Chemistry and Physics questions are important and you do not want to lose points on them.. For English and Mathematics or Reasoning you can just go ahead and try your best.
The AKU test is really tough when it comes to understanding things. It is harder than the MDCAT. The AKU test checks if you really get it and if you can use what you know it does not just check if you can remember things. You can find test papers and the answers at paklearningspot.com. These papers give you the idea of what the questions are like, on the AKU test.
What Topics Are Tested?
| Subject | Core Areas |
| Biology | Cell biology, genetics, human physiology, molecular biology, ecology, microbiology |
| Chemistry | Organic chemistry (reaction mechanisms), Physical chemistry (equilibrium, thermodynamics), Inorganic |
| Physics | Mechanics, waves and oscillations, electromagnetism, modern physics |
| Mathematics / Reasoning | Algebra, analytical reasoning, problem-solving, data interpretation |
| English | Long reading comprehension passages, grammar, vocabulary, critical reasoning |
Preparation tip: The Medical College Admission Test preparation is really helpful for the science parts. It is not enough by itself. The English part, which is not something you will find in the Medical College Admission Test, is where a lot of students end up losing marks that they should have gotten. If you practice reading comprehension every day for three or four months before the test you will see a difference. The Medical College Admission Test preparation is good for science. For the English part you need to do some extra work, like the daily reading comprehension practice.

Scholarships and Financial Aid 2026
1. Full MBBS Scholarship — Top Performers
This information is from the Admission Information document of the Aga Khan University, for the year 2026-2027.
The Aga Khan University has a financial assistance programme that gives scholarships to the best performing students who are going to study MBBS and who really need financial help. The University Scholarship Committee gives these scholarships based on how the students have done and how much they need the money. The committee looks at all the students automatically so you do not have to fill out an application. The Aga Khan University changes the rules and the number of scholarships every year. If you did well on the entry test and you really need financial help do not think that you cannot afford to study at the Aga Khan University. Just let the process happen.
2. Needs-Sensitive Financial Assistance Programme
AKU clearly says in its papers that it runs a financial help program that considers people’s needs. This program is meant to help individuals from low-income families attend. It is not a small amount of money. It is a big part of what AKU does.
To get aid you apply at the same time as you apply for admission. You will have to give details about your family’s income, your property and your financial records. This process takes a while so you should start it soon as you apply.
3. External Funding Options
| Source | Details |
| HEC Need-Based Scholarship | For students enrolled in Pakistani universities, income-based |
| Ehsaas Undergraduate Scholarship | For students registered in NSER database |
| Provincial Government Scholarships | Sindh, Punjab, KPK, Balochistan each have programmes |
| Bank Loans / Education Finance | Some banks offer education financing — speak to your bank directly |
Advice for families who think they cannot afford AKU:
You should apply for admission. On that day you should also apply for financial aid. The official documents from AKU show that the institution really wants to help students who deserve to study even if they do not have a lot of money. The worst thing that can happen is that they say no to you.. The best thing that can happen is that AKU pays for your entire degree. AKU is committed to helping deserving students, like you and applying for aid is a great way to get help from AKU.
8. AKU vs Competitors — Honest 2026 Comparison

All of these places will help you become a doctor. The Aga Khan University, NUMS, Shifa or CMH. The thing that is different about the Aga Khan University is that it has a lot of research and it is known in countries and you get to work with patients a lot.

9. Rankings and Reputation
National Ranking
AKU is placed in the W4 category by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) — the highest possible tier for Pakistani universities. It is consistently ranked the number one private university in Pakistan.
Global Rankings
- QS World University Rankings: AKU is ranked #473 in Best Global Universities — a significant achievement for any institution from a developing country
- QS Asian University Rankings: Ranked within the top 200–250 universities in Asia
- Research standing: Multiple AKU faculty members have been counted among the top 2% of scientists globally based on citation impact and research output across their fields
What This Means Practically
AKUs ranking is not a number that you get on a certificate. The AKU ranking directly determines how people in countries think about your degree from AKU. When you have a degree from AKU it is easier to get your USMLE credentials processed. You also have a chance of getting into residency programs in the US and the UK. Employers at the hospitals in the Middle East and North America know about AKU. They think it is a great institution. This means that having a degree from AKU gives you advantages when it comes to your career that lasts your whole lifetime, at AKU.
10. Honest Pros and Cons of Choosing AKU
Genuine Advantages
The clinical training is unmatched in Pakistani private medical education. The Aga Khan University Hospital treats tough cases that a lot of other teaching hospitals in Pakistan do not get to see. At the Aga Khan University Hospital students get to work with patients in the two years of their studies, which is something that students at other hospitals usually do not get to do until they are specialists. The doctors that the Aga Khan University Hospital trains are better prepared to deal with complex medical cases, at the Aga Khan University Hospital.
The degree functions internationally from day one. The Aga Khan University Hospital treats tough cases that a lot of other teaching hospitals cannot handle. The Aga Khan University has partnerships with some good universities like Johns Hopkins and the University of Michigan. They also work with UCSF and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. These partnerships are not just for show. They actually help the teachers and the students. The Aga Khan University also helps make the courses better. The Aga Khan University students do well on the USMLE exams they pass more than 90 percent of the time which shows that the education at the Aga Khan University is really good.
Zero quotas, zero politics, zero donations. The official document from AKU clearly says this. AKU gives every seat to the person who deserves it most. AKU has one of the ways of choosing students in all of Pakistan’s universities.
Financial aid is real and institutionally funded. This is not something that is added on. It is a part of what the Aga Khan University is about. The Aga Khan University is really committed to this. Families who really need help should send in an application to the Aga Khan University.
Research access from Year 1. If you want to go into medicine or get published or do some special training in another country the Aga Khan University is a great place to be. They have the setting and people to guide you. No other medical school in Pakistan, for undergraduates, has much research work included in their programme as the Aga Khan University does.
Genuine Disadvantages
The fee is very high. The cost of fees for the first year is really high; it is more than PKR 3.6 million. If we add the cost of staying in a hostel for five years the total cost of fees and hostel can be as much as PKR 22 million to PKR 23 million. For Pakistani families academic fees and hostel costs are too expensive without some kind of financial help. So you and your family should think about this. Be honest with each other before you even apply for this.
The competition is severe. A lot of students try to get into this program. There are only about 100 seats available. Every year students who have more than 85 percent in their FSc exams are not accepted into the program. You should not think that getting into the Aga Khan University is a thing no matter how well you do on the exams. Instead use the Aga Khan University as a goal to motivate yourself to be one of the students.
Programme diversity is limited. The Aga Khan University does not have programs in engineering or law or business or commerce or social sciences and so on. If what you want to study is not related to health sciences or education then the Aga Khan University is not the place for you.
The location is Karachi only for MBBS/BScN. The Aga Khan University or AKU does not have engineering courses. It also does not offer law or business or commerce. So students who want to go to AKU and’re from places like Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan and other cities will have to move to a new place. They will have to plan for a lot of money each month on top of the money they pay for tuition to cover their living costs. This is a deal for students from AKU who have to relocate.
The academic environment is demanding and unforgiving. At AKU they do not accept students who’re there for the wrong reasons. The work is really tough, from the first day. AKU students who are really motivated can handle it. They learn a lot.. Aku students who are only there because their family wants them to be or because they do not really want to be doctors have a very hard time.
Prof Shahzaib khan advised : AKU is definitely worth aiming for.. If you check AKUs official document it actually tells applicants to apply to other universities too. So follow that advice. You should also apply to colleges, like NUMS, Shifa, Dow, Ziauddin or any other colleges that match your marks and situation. Your main goal is to become a doctor and AKU is one great way to achieve that. However it is not the way to become a good doctor.

This is where the reputation of the Aga Khan University really helps people get jobs. The Aga Khan University has high pass rates for the United States Medical Licensing Examination. Over 90 percent. This is the result among all the medical schools in Pakistan. Because of this, people who graduate from the Aga Khan University often get into residency programs. They do this through something called the International Medical Graduate pathway.
The Aga Khan University graduates follow a path. They take the USMLE Step 1 test while they are still in school. Then they take the Step 2 CK test after they finish their House Job. After that they try to get into a residency program.
Now many Aga Khan University graduates have important jobs. They work as consultants, department heads and professors at hospitals and universities, in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United Arab Emirates and other countries.

Conclusion and Final Advice
Aga Khan University is thought of as the private medical school in Pakistan. This is not something people say. It is true because Aga Khan University has been great for forty years and has good relationships with other schools in other countries. Aga Khan University has the highest USMLE pass rates in Pakistan and Aga Khan University has a lot of former students who are doing well all over the world.
However Aga Khan University is not the place for everyone. Because it is very hard to get into Aga Khan University and students only get two chances to apply to Aga Khan University, for MBBS students should study hard and apply to other colleges just in case and try to become good doctors who care about people and do the right thing.
